Water Supply Process
In general, water is harnessed and made available for use by means of:
- Containment in a dam or weir
- Abstraction
- Treatment and Purification
- Pumping, Conveyance and Storage in reservoirs
- Distribution and Reticulation
- Demand management, Pressure management, Loss management and Metering

- Existing and Proposed Water Supply Infrastructure
- Cost Estimates and Budget Requirements
Water Abstraction
- Water abstracted must:
- match the needs of the user, and
- take account of the needs of the other users of that water source.
Water Treatment
- The treatment needed is a function of the quality of the water being abstracted & the use to which it will be put.
Water Supply Pipelines and Storage
- Pipeline sizing is a function of water demand, with account being taken of peak flow.
- Reservoir storage capacity is also a function of such water demand.
- Storage reservoirs hold sufficient water to permit an adequate continuous supply.
Water Distribution and Reticulation
- Supply systems must ensure uninterrupted water in sufficient volume and at sufficient pressure.
- The entire network must be adequately sized to permit flow, at times of peak daily demand, that is sufficient in volume and pressure.
Demand-, Pressure- and Loss Management
- A well-managed system of water supply must incorporate mechanisms that minimise wastage and limit leakage.
- This enables proper monitoring and intervention, and is achieved by
- Supply zone discretisation and Pressure zone management
- Bulk and Consumer metering.
