The life of any particular road is a function both of its design and the degree of maintenance applied.
Road Design Components:
Road Classification
- Roads are typically classified according to their respective levels of mobility and accessibility, with those roads providing greatest mobility conversely providing the least accessibility.
- It is on the applicable classification level that the design of the road is based.
Geometric Design
- The objective in Geometric design is to promote efficiency and safety.
- It is divided into three main parts – alignment, longitudinal profile, and cross-section
- Alignment is not only the route of the road, but also the provision made for intersections and the like
- Longitudinal profile presents the vertical aspect of the road, including the crests and valleys, and the grade lines connecting them
- Cross section covers the position and number of vehicle lanes, bicycle lanes and sidewalks, along with their cross-falls or cambers
Pavement Design
- Pavement design is intended to provide the most cost-effective pavement structure whilst optimizing the level of service provided to road users
- It takes account of:
- Soil Support (subgrade) factors
- Traffic factors, such as vehicle types, loading and frequency
- Regional factors
- Serviceability factors
Wearing Surface
- The wearing surface of a road is normally, but not always, one that is:
- Impervious to the ingress of water
- Has an even running surface
- Is durable
- Has a high skidding resistance
Road Marking, Road Signage and Signals
- Road signs, signals and markings are important components of road safety. They:
- regulate the safe flow of traffic
- warn motorists of the conditions on the road ahead
- provide information
- give guidance about routes and destinations.
