Roads

The life of any particular road is a function both of its design and the degree of maintenance applied.

Road Design Components:

Road Classification

  • Roads are typically classified according to their respective levels of mobility and accessibility, with those roads providing greatest mobility conversely providing the least accessibility.
  • It is on the applicable classification level that the design of the road is based.

Geometric Design

  • The objective in Geometric design is to promote efficiency and safety.
  • It is divided into three main parts – alignment, longitudinal profile, and cross-section
    • Alignment is not only the route of the road, but also the provision made for intersections and the like
    • Longitudinal profile presents the vertical aspect of the road, including the crests and valleys, and the grade lines connecting them
    • Cross section covers the position and number of vehicle lanes, bicycle lanes and sidewalks, along with their cross-falls or cambers

Pavement Design

  • Pavement design is intended to provide the most cost-effective pavement structure whilst optimizing the level of service provided to road users
  • It takes account of:
    • Soil Support (subgrade) factors
    • Traffic factors, such as vehicle types, loading and frequency
    • Regional factors
    • Serviceability factors

Wearing Surface

  • The wearing surface of a road is normally, but not always, one that is:
    • Impervious to the ingress of water
    • Has an even running surface
    • Is durable
    • Has a high skidding resistance

Road Marking, Road Signage and Signals

  • Road signs, signals and markings are important components of road safety. They:
    • regulate the safe flow of traffic
    • warn motorists of the conditions on the road ahead
    • provide information
    • give guidance about routes and destinations.
